BBB Advice on Buying a Computer

Austin, TX – September 2, 2009 - With the school year in full swing for most families and college students, now is the time many consumers are looking for a new computer. Advances in technology make even the latest computer models obsolete in a few months, but knowing when and how to select the right computer can save consumers money and time spent in the electronics section.

“Choosing the right computer can be overwhelming for many consumers,” said Carrie A. Hurt, President and CEO of BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas. “Consumers just need to make sure they are getting the computer that meets their needs and buy it from a company they can trust.”

BBB has advice for making an informed decision the next time consumers are ready to pull the plug on their old machine.

Do Your Research:
With all of the different choices on models and brands, it’s important that consumers choose a computer that will fit their needs. For example, if the computer will be used to play music while browsing the Internet and editing video for a project, a fast processor and video card along with plenty of RAM (random access memory) and hard drive space is ideal. However, if the computer is used primarily for typing reports, taking notes and checking e-mail, there is no need to spend extra for unnecessary upgrades.

Pay Attention to Catalogs:
Many electronics stores have computer sales that change from week to week. Once the computer goes on sale, the time may be right cut a check and save a few dollars. Just be sure there are not any hidden details that could affect the final purchase price.

Be Extra Careful Online:
One of the advantages of online shopping is that consumers can take their time to comparison shop. Making online purchases can put credit card information at risk so be sure to check the trustworthiness of the business at

Make Sure You’re Protected:
Computers are long-term investments and a warranty can bring peace of mind. Most computers come with a manufacturer’s warranty and many retailers offer extended warranties. Remember that extended warranties usually come from third parties so consumers need to be sure they understand what they are paying for including information on who to contact should something malfunction.
