BBB "Shred Day” Offers FREE Shredding, Recycling and ID Theft Prevention

Austin, TX - Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas invites local residents and small businesses on Saturday, October 10, 2009, to take steps toward recycling and identity protection. BBB Shred Day gives consumers access to free shredding services in three locations throughout Central Texas.

“Shredding and recycling sensitive paper documents is an important habit to build, but it’s only half the message we want to send,” said Carrie A. Hurt, President and CEO of BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas. “That’s why BBB will be on-site to distribute tips for protecting your identity year-round.”

According to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, the nationwide number of reported victims of identity theft increased to 10 million in 2008, a 19 percent increase over 2007. The last BBB “Shred Day” event on April 18, 2009 resulted in over 40,000 pounds (20 tons) of financial records, bills and other personal information shredded, recycled and kept out of the hands of ID thieves.
